Description:
The structural, thermal, and mass properties of convolute-wrapped paper phenolic tubing are being determined, and studies have been made of manufacturing techniques for production of rocket motor case components from this material. This data will be used for parametric studies and to design and test an M58A2 rocket motor with a paper phenolic case. Test procedures have been developed for all material tests and most testing has been initiated. Data has been obtained for across-grain tensile strength and modulus versus temperature and strain rate, compressive strength and modulus versus strain rate, interlaminar shear strength versus strain rate and temperature, and adhesive tensile shear strength. Results indicate that the across-grain ultimate strength is about 11,500 psi, the interlaminar shear strength is about 2,000 psi, and the compressive strength is about 20,000 psi. All seem to be independent of strain rate and the temperature dependence does not seem to be as severe as has been reported. The stress-strain relationship is definitely nonlinear. Inconclusive results with the adhesive tests are attributable to test technique. It appears that improved material properties can be obtained easily by using stronger resins and optimizing the ratio of across-grain to with-grain strength. (Author)
