  • Description: According to a survey conducted by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing in 2017, 9.1% of nurses were male and 19.2% were minorities.2 This is low compared to the general population of the United States, in which minorities represent 39.9% of the population.3 Although there has been a steady increase in the number of men in the nursing profession, particularly during the past decade, there remains a significant lack of diversity in the nursing profession. In 2002, the Institute of Medicine released the report Unequal Treatment: What Healthcare Providers Need to Know About Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Healthcare,4 which highlighted that diversifying health care professionals would help to decrease health care disparities for minorities. Acknowledgments: The author thanks the AORN Headquarters team, particularly AORN Chief Executive Officer Linda Groah, MSN, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC, FAAN, and James Cousin, MBA, CPA, AORN chief financial officer and vice president of business strategy, for their dedication to improvement in DEI as well as assistance in development of the comprehensive diversity plan; and Gayle Davis, director of Corporate Communications, for her expertise in communications that has helped support DEI efforts.
