  • Description: Dacite, an igneous rock with high silica composition, was a strategic resource for the ancient inhabitants living in the basin of Zacapu (Michoacan), during 100 BCE. and 1450 CE. It was used to make a diversified range of artifacts for their subsistence, craft and ritual activities. Research started in 2011 in the Cerro Vicente deposit has shown in an unexpected way that dacite had been intensively exploited through a well-organized quarry-workshops as complex as the those developed in Mesoamerica for obsidian. In 2015, another important mining complex was identified thanks to a LIDAR survey, on the dacite flow known as Las Minas. This article aims to demonstrate how the use of LIDAR data, combined with other information sources (field survey and mapping, characterization of the quarry and workshops areas, and stratigraphic excavations), provides a powerful lecture key to discuss dacite exploitation strategies.
