Description:
[...]by my third year of teaching, though I was still at the front of the room--even when we sat in a huge circle in my senior classes, imitating my own graduate seminars--and though I was still essentially preaching and pulling answers, my choices from the curriculum reflected my deepening involvement in the Peace Movement. [...]the kids in my junior class called our course "3 Negro Honors": I remember that we did at least Hiroshima, Huck Finn and Cry, the Beloved Country there, looking hard at racism. Because I was part of the original summer group of volunteers, and because by mistake (or eagerness) I came to Oxford, Ohio, a week early, I was close to the thinking of the SNCC workers and their allies who had drawn up the Freedom School documents. [...]it became part of my political agenda to have these white children, too, find their voices, their strengths, and their community with each other. Because of my experience in Mississippi, I made it part of my job to go to children's homes and get to know the context of their lives.
