Description:
Global driving forces in the paper industry, new and developing trends in coating technologies, and emerging printing and writing paper grades are examined from a North American versus European perspective. Generally, as the paper industry in North America, specifically in the US, has matured over the past half century, fine paper production has progressed steadily toward commodity grades on large, fast paper machines, fueled by an extremely high per capita consumption in a single, unified domestic market. By comparison, most European production tends to be specialized, serving more diverse customer bases in the various countries and regions. However, this trend has begun changing dramatically in recent years, as Europe moves rapidly toward unification and adjusts toward globalization. Overall, it is in coating and specialized publication papers areas that European and North American practices are most clearly defined.
