  • Description: This article investigates the friendship patterns of Asian students and how the influences that shape them during their sojourn in New Zealand universities. Far from home-country supports, but carrying the responsibility of parental expectations, friendships are their primary source of social supports. The type of friendships that the students make is dependent on their level of intercultural adaptation. Relationship data from 50 Asian international student participants at Universities, from a range of six East and South East Asian states, is analysed through the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity as constructed by Bennett and Hammer, (1998) but revised and reconstructed by Bennett, 2005). Intercultural friendships do not just 'happen' as a result of immersion within New Zealand universities. But rather, friendship networks are sought and created by the Asian international students resulting in negotiated intercultural adaptation and life-long friendships.
