Title:
Author:
Milanesi, Claudio
Subjects:
Humanities and Social Sciences
Description:
Enrico Deaglio stands out as one of the authors who interprets the characteristics of the new genre, or if you prefer, the new way of writing, in the most personal and at the same time rigorous way. The four writings collected in this small volume do not yet constitute a complete and articulate study of the work of the writer and journalist from Turin, but they are an anticipation of it: four precise case studies, as he would do, on some of the works that have marked his path, and that reveal some of its constant features. The first, and most substantial, is dedicated to two of his books, Bella ciao and Besame mucho, two "diaries in public" as he himself defined them, published in the mid-1990s, between the end of the First Republic and the beginning of the Berlusconi twenty-year period; the next studies the common features between these and his most impressive work, the 2,500 pages of the three volumes of Patria 1967 2020; the third and fourth are devoted to the diptych of his narratives of the second half of the 2010s, two Italo-American stories, one an investigation, the other a novel, but with a lot of reality inside. The two works, Storia vera e terribile fra Italia e America and La zia Irene e l'anarchico Tresca, well represent the two axes of his production, on the one hand non-fiction, counter-history, memory and investigation, and on the other the narrative of invention, which uses the novel form to tell true stories, and perhaps reveal the hidden plot, because, as one of his characters says, perhaps with a certain irony, freedom is when "we can choose which truth we like best".
