Acorn thumb-pieces were fixed to vessel lids by the early 14th century (cf. a pewter flagon from Tonbridge Castle (Alexander and Binski (1987) 281, cat. no. 211)), but the form of this example is closer to that on a 15th- or 16th-century ewer from Strata Florida (Lewis (1987) 4, fig. 7).
