  • Description: Standing against the unclear risks are the multiple benefits from breastfeeding. Breast milk is nature's best infant food, providing the precise nutrient composition to support optimal growth of the human infant. Breast milk is an economical and sustainable foodstuff for infants at a vulnerable time in their lives. Certainly it is superior to formula, which can come with its own "risks". 15 Breastfeeding undeniably provides immense health benefits to both baby and mother. Mothers who breastfeed have reduced risk of conditions such as osteoporosis and ovarian and breast cancers. 16 Babies gain crucial immune-stimulating substances and protection against many different childhood illnesses. For instance, breastfeeding has been correlated with significantly decreased risk of asthma and of acute leukemias in childhood. 17 There is also evidence of a positive association between the duration of breastfeeding and cognitive and academic ability. 18
