  • Description: Depending on which survey you want to believe, organizations either have no clue about protecting customer data or they are rapidly implementing encryption solutions to protect against data loss. In one study, commissioned by Scott Scott LLP and conducted by the Ponemon Institute, nearly 85% of businesses say they have experienced a data security breach, but 46% have not implemented encryption solutions even after suffering such a breach. Two recent Forrester surveys, however, found that 45% of companies planned to purchase e-mail encryption solutions this year, while twice as many people in 2006 adopted laptop encryption compared with 2005. Many businesses are including requirements for their partners to encrypt sensitive data in transit or at rest, says Forrester researcher Paul Stamp.
