Description:
Tunisian farmers face several problems, including low incomes and limited arable land. Farmers have adapted to this situation by adopting new practices such as agroforestry. This work aims to characterize agroforestry systems in Tunisia and to understand the context in which agroforestry is adopted. This study was carried out in three stages. The first stage consisted in a cartographic analysis allowing a description of the olive-growing systems according to agro-climatic characteristics, and the choice of study sites representative of the diversity of olive groves in Tunisia. The second stage, in the form of an agronomic diagnosis followed by a statistical analysis by factorial analysis of mixed data and an ascending hierarchical classification, made it possible to collect the data necessary for the classification of agroforestry systems according to structural characteristics at the plot level, and the last stage was the carrying out of surveys among farmers to understand the determinants of practices. The first stage led to a general characterization of olive groves in Tunisia on the basis of topography, irrigation and climate: Northern Tunisia is the most diversified region in terms of olive-growing systems. The center is the region that contains the most surface area in olive groves. The south of the country contains less surface area in olive groves and less diversity because of the difficult soil and climate conditions. The second stage allowed the establishment of a classification of agroforestry systems according to structural characteristics, leading to the establishment of a typology. Five different groups can be distinguished according to location, specific composition and water management. The first group includes irrigated agroforestry systems in the north. These systems are based on an association of olive trees and mixed vegetable species. A second group represents the irrigated agroforestry systems in the center. These systems are in association with monoculture market gardening. A third group represents the fodder-based systems present in the north and center. A fourth system is based on the association with fruit trees, particularly almond trees, in rainfed systems. The fifth system is characterized by the association of olive trees and cereals, both rainfed in the north of the country. The third stage allowed a better understanding of the farmers' perception of agroforestry. Indeed, farmers practice the association for economic and land reasons. The advantages and disadvantages of this practice from the farmers' point of view are multiple. The main advantages mentioned are a better use of space and better water management. As for the disadvantages, disease transmission and competition between different species are the most evoked. This study is a first step towards a better study of Tunisian agroforestry. Other aspects of the Tunisian agroforestry can be studied, such as an 'ecological assessment of the effect of this practice.
