  • Description: This short text was published as an eLetter in the journal Science on 13/11/2023: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adj0102In this eLetter we comment on the need for ocean garbage cleanup, advocated by others. We argue that most plastic debris reside on land (70%) and only a small amount floats at the ocean surface (0.004%). We recommend that to address the global environmental plastics issue we need to first limit plastics production and use, and clean up the large amount of plastics on land.
