"Squatters at Number 10". 'While cutting the garden hedge one summer's day, I became aware of a shadowy something in the foliage.' An occupied wasps' nest is seen, with holes in the side and underneath. A pest control officer from Rent-o-kill arrives. 'I asked him to do as little damage to the nest as possible, because I wanted to have a look at the way it was made after it had been neutralised,' says Maurice Puttock, the film's maker and narrator. The pest control officer pumps insecticide powder into the nest using a bellows device. A cloud of powder emerges from the hedge. After a couple of days, the wasps will have died after coming in contact with the powder, coating the inside of the nest. [included in online clip] The voice over continues. Puttock cuts branches away, exposing the nest and uncovering its textured surface, semicircular plates of wafer thin wood pulp forming an armoured surface. A neighbour cuts out a section of the nest wall with a craft knife, revealing more layers underneath. The inside of the nest is constructed with solid layers of honeycomb structure joined by webs and pillars. Puttock estimates the nest produced around 1000 wasps before it was neutralised. The neighbour takes out the layers one by one, 'a truly marvellous structure'. [Not included in clip] A wasp grub is seen, protected from the powder by its cell. 'What we didn't know was how the sides and shape were fixed,' he says, 'was it instinct or was a foreman appointed by the wasps whose job it was to set the capacity of the nest?' Maurice Puttock is seen, trimming the hedge in his garden, 'without fear of being stung by a swarm of angry wasps.' End.
