Description: NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formulaI[R , R and R are lower alkyl or R and R together may form a cyclic acetal; Y is H or RSO - (R is aromatic group or alkyl which may have a substituent group)]. EXAMPLE:1-(6-Methoxy-2-naphthyl)-2-hydroxy-1-propanone dimethyl acetal. USE:An intermediate capable of preparing an alpha-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)alkanoic acid or an ester thereof useful as an anti-inflammatory and an analgesic agent by an easy operation easily in high yield. PROCESS:A compound expressed by formula III (X is halogen) is reacted with a compound expressed by the formula R OM (M is alkali metal) in the presence of a compound expressed by the formula R OH to give a compound expressed by formulaIa (R is R ). The resultant compound is then reacted with an O-sulfonylating agent to afford the aimed compound expressed by formulaIb, which is then hydrolyzed to give the compound expressed by formula II (R is H or lower alkyl) with ease.
