  • Description: In 2007-2008 there was a lively debate among Hungarian public intellectuals on how the so-called “digital revolution”— and the spreading of technologies and applications coined under the term “web2.0”— would (and should) affect the everyday practice of literary criticism. I reconstruct the theoretical positions that have been taken by the participants of this early debate. In my paper I focus on the conceptual framework in which the advent of new (or just “new”) genres of literary criticism — book blogs, reviews written by (anonymous) readers on commercial websites like Amazon, etc. — were originally interpreted during the debate, and strive to explain why most of the participants misunderstood (at least partly) the ways in which the rapid development of the technological environment potentially affected professional and “amateur” discourse(s) of literary criticism.
