  • Description: The Literary Club was founded on October 29, 1849, by a small group of educated young men, and established themselves at 500 E. 4th in 1930. Its membership is limited to 100, and is the oldest literary club west of the Alleghenies. While its existence was not widely publicized, in time membership would not only expand but include such names as future Presidents Hayes and Taft, Walter E. Langsam, Nick Clooney, and Frank Duvanek. Its guest list also featured such names as Oscar Wilde, Booker T. Washington, Robert Frost, and Mark Twain.
