  • Description: Having experienced several decades' rapid economic development, have Chinese people acquired some degree of post-materialist values as Ronald Inglehart expected? If so, do post-materialist values affect people's political attitudes and behavior in the China? This study is designed to answer these two critical questions based on data collected from the two latest waves of the World Values Surveys (WVS) and the 2018 New Era China Social Governance Study. The results from this study support most of Inglehart's post-materialism theses: most people in China are still at the early stage of shift toward post-materialism; like other countries, China is most likely to see post-materialists emerging in its younger, better educated and richer social strata. Meanwhile, in China, post-materialist values do influence a set of political attitudes and behavior, making Chinese people more critical about the performance of the current government and the conditions of political freedom, and more willing to participate in political activities
