  • Description: In 2002, total paper and board production in mainland China was reported to be 37.8 million tonnes (an 18.1% increase over 2001). A goal of 50-60 million tpy total production has been set for the year 2010. By that time, domestic virgin wood pulp production will have doubled, with pulpwood supplied from domestic plantations and supplemented by imported wood chips and pulpwood. Imported market wood pulp will still play an important role in the Chinese industry and non-wood fibers will remain an indispensable fiber source for the growth of the Chinese industry. Increases in reed, bamboo, and wheat straw pulping capacities are expected within the next few years. Efforts will have to be taken to promote domestic wastepaper recycling, with a goal of having the recycling rate increase to 35-38% by the end of this decade. Aside from the improved domestic wastepaper recovery, a 6-8% average annual increase in wastepaper imports is expected for the foreseeable future. A production goal of 50-60 million tonnes of paper and paperboard has been set for 2010. Domestic virgin wood pulp production is expected to double from the present 2.14 million tpy to more than 4.30 million tpy by 2010. Hopefully, the existing 415,000 ha of plantation forests will join forces with the newly established plantations covering more than three million ha to supply the pulpwood that the industry needs; imported pulpwood and wood chips will supplement the domestic supply. Market wood pulp importation will continue to increase at an average rate of 5-6%/yr in the coming years.
