  • Description: Although pregnancy termination has been legal in South Africa since 1997, pregnant women who request an abortion can find themselves in a dilemma & are often dependent on professional assistance. The women can be guided & supported in overcoming obstacles & normalising her functioning through crisis intervention. This study, of 25 pregnant women who participated in pre-abortion counselling at Potchefstroom Hospital, aimed to; discuss unwanted pregnancy as a life experience; distinguish between adults & teenagers who requested an abortion; study the meaning a woman attaches to the termination; & compile a profile of those that request an abortion. The findings showed that the causes & experiences of unwanted pregnancy included: ambivalence; denial; anger; depression; fear; helplessness; & detachment. Also shown to be a contributing factor included the relationship with, & the attitudes of, the biological father, & general poverty. The authors conclude that women with unwanted pregnancy should not be ignored, & social work aid should be available when & if it is needed. Adapted from the source document.
