Description: Readers of Pig Robinson would also recognize two other famous literary sailors playing supporting roles in Potter's narrative: the Owl and the Pussy-cat of Edward Lear's 1871 poem, itself inspired by Defoe's novel. Crusoe becomes a model of industry and piety, while the Owl and Cat "hand in hand, on the edge of the sand, / … danced by the light of the moon" (ll. 29–30). What follows is an abbreviated version of The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902), complete with the line drawings that would serve, almost ten years later, as the basis for the published book.4 There is little of the epistolary in Potter's letter to Noel—beyond the greeting and salutation, it is a tightly focused and structured story. Potter's suggestion that she is "cribbing" her story from these earlier works does no credit to the original aspects of her version of the Robinsonade; on the other hand, her reference to the literary debt she owed Defoe leaves out her equally significant debt to Lear's "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat."
