  • Description: This evaluation of the Urban Staff Development Laboratory Graduate Program consists of seven sections: a) background of the project, b) program description, c) presentation of program objectives and assessment of their accomplishment, d) achievement data on students enrolled in the program, e) psychological education as it relates to the socioemotional learning environment, f) report of community involvement in the program, and g) a summary. The ultimate objective of the project was to provide quality education for youth living in the Model Cities Neighborhood in the nation's capital, by upgrading the competency of elementary and secondary level teachers in the area. The eight specific objectives of the graduate program are a) to increase ability to deal effectively with children and adults in the urban area, b) to create a classroom environment that facilitates individual learning, c) to improve students' skills in reading and math, d) to help Black children develop a positive self-concept, e) to develop research skills in the participants, f) to help teachers assist other teachers with the development of their instructional programs, g) to increase area residents' knowledge of teaching techniques, and h) to understand community and environmental conditions and their effect on learning.
