After a 125% increase in the number of deaths during 2016, the province of British Columbia declared a public health emergency. Education campaigns and wider distribution of naloxone kits have been the key strategy to address the growing epidemic; however, the clinical manifestations of fentanyl use continue to be a challenge and there is a concern for increased health care burden due to higher admission rates.
