  • Description: The Associated Students of the University of Washington, partnered with the Asian Student Coalition, African Student Union, Iranian Student Association, Organization of Arab Students, among many others, to organize an event titled "Vietnam for Vietnamese" featuring history, poetry and folk music to take place at the University of Washington. Nguyen Thai Binh is noted as a featured guest., Nguyen Thai Binh was a South Vietnamese citizen who attended the University of Washington on a U.S. A.I.D. scholarship. While in the United States, he started to protest America’s involvement in his home country of Vietnam. Because of these anti-war sentiments, his scholarship was revoked and he was ordered to return home. On his flight on July 2, 1972, Binh attempted to divert the plane from Saigon to Hanoi as an “act of revenge” against the United States government. He was shot and killed on the plane by a retired police officer on board. Part of: Pacific Northwest Historical Documents -- University of Washington -- Binh Memorial Collection.
