  • Description: The Russian pilgrimage experience in the Middle East left a significant and fascinating record in a wealth of travel accounts about the Arab-Ottoman world. Russian pilgrims' narratives contributed extensively to the type of knowledge about the Middle East in Russia during the pre-modern era when they were one of the major sources and, at times, the only one for information about this part of the world. Kirillina examines the narratives of Russian pilgrims to the Holy Land of Christianity during 16th-18th centuries. The Russian church and ecclesiastical institutions readily accepted and used this body of travel literature for spiritual and ideological reasons and even political ones on the basis of the fact that Russia and the Christian East had retained continual interlinks since the early days of Christianity.
