Description:
Through the ebb and flow of cultural change, leadership transitions, and uncertain funding, the Academy has always centered intellectual independence, nonpartisanship, and a science-based approach to public policy. [...]the Academy librarian settled on the most imme- diate and practical solution: sharing shelf space at the new Wisconsin Historical Society building.9 Within a decade, the Academy library had been fully absorbed into the Historical Society's library, and the specimen collections were gradually dispersed among teaching institutions and museums.10 Increas- ingly, state government agencies provided their own experts to advise the legislature on conservation, agriculture, and other concerns. Charles Van Hise led an Academy committee that drafted the bill that established the official survey in 1897.11 State boosters saw the natural resource surveys as an essential tool for attracting settlers and entrepreneurs, and the resulting data was certainly invaluable for mining companies, farmers, builders, and town leaders. "12 For scientists like him, the lure was the opportunity to engage in original research and specimen collection peers were also driven by sincere concerns about deforestation, declining wildlife populations, and the rapid loss of archaeological evidence in the wake of advancing settlement.
