On one level, initiatives designed to ‘empower’ Muslim women are difficult to criticise. They are nonetheless also deeply problematic when framed in the context of the UK’s counterterrorism agenda. This is not because the presence of marginalised Muslim women in the UK who may be in need of empowerment is under question (although equally, that is not to suggest that all Muslim women are marginalised or in need of empowerment).
