  • Description: The 400 million people who escaped absolute poverty by the $1 a day standard over 1980-2001 are still poor even by the standards of middle-income developing countries. Meanwhile, during that period, the number living on less than $2 a day has risen from 2.4 billion to 2.7 billion. The aggregate progress for the very poorest has not been shared by all regions. If one focuses on the developing world outside China, the number of poor has changed very little. The composition of world poverty has changed noticeably, however, with the number of poor falling in Asia but rising elsewhere. For example, it has roughly doubled in Africa.
