  • Description: We live in an apartment overlooking Sloane Square in London and also have an old pre-Victorian gothic manor house perched on the edge of a cliff which drops 150ft into the sea on the UK's north Devon coast at Glenthorne. It is the only place in the world with the wild serenity of Chester on Canada's Nova Scotia coast, which is also one of my favourite places. You bought an island there. Island people are different and life is different: even though we are actually only a quarter of a mile from shore. The family all call it home and it is the only place the grandchildren come to in the summer. My affection for the place has only deepened over the years and neither myself or anyone in the family would ever sell it. That's what makes finding an island so difficult - because often people don't like selling. My advice for anyone looking to buy one is to find the area you are most happy in and buy the island when it comes along. I lost one once when I haggled too long. You don't get a second chance. You have been a member of the Canadian Olympic Bobsled team, do you still have a passion for the outdoors and sport? I have a lifelong love of cricket - and am a life member of the Somerset County Cricket Club. In Canada, we are members of the Chester Yacht Club. While we are on our island we go out on our 1938 Tancook sloop called The Ripple. Despite its age it has won the Coronation Cup race there four times in the past six years. Even though I have spent many years away from Canada I always missed its summers, the maritime life and the gorgeous colours in autumn. I always miss Nova Scotia in particular, and am sorry we only spend seven to eight weeks there a year. Maybe one day soon I'll buy a one-way ticket and spend the rest of my summers on [Meisner]'s Island and my winters on the Chester peninsula. That's where we are happiest.
