  • Description: This material is made from the inner back of Japanese shrubs such as paper mulberry, which has very long, flexible and durable fibers and provides strong and breathable protection against UV and humidity changes. The shrubs are cut and pruned and the branches are soaked in water to allow the outer bark to be scraped away. This bark is soaked again to detach its inner layer, which is then boiled in a strong alkaline solution to remove starch and oil. The fibers are rinsed clean, beaten, and dipped into a solution of water and tororo-aoi. The fibers are made into paper using the traditional method of a bamboo mesh screen in a wooden frame. After drying, it is hand painted, re-dried, and crumpled until it is softer. Available in 8 colors, custom mixed colors available (from nacood Lab accompanying written description); Part of: Materials Collection -- University of Pennsylvania -- nacood Lab
