Description:
ABSTRACT Multiple crises in recent years, including the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the global energy crisis, the climate crisis, the decarbonization of the energy mix, the European Green Pact, the energy transition, the conflict in Ukraine, and the energy trilemma, have created the conditions for a new energy revolution. [...]of these events, energy security has become the main priority on the political agenda in all European Union countries. [2] COAL AND THERMAL POWER After the outbreak of health and energy crises of the last 3 years, in Romania today, coal and lignite are used for a fifth of the electricity production (year 2022), although the power installed and available in the National Energy System (SEN) of the coal-based units is 4920 MW, of which approx. 1000 MW is used for average consumption (fig. 2). The annual production of coal has continuously decreased, from 12 million tons in 1989, to 0.20 million tons in 2022 and is used for producing electricity and thermal energy in the Paroşeni thermal power plant, located in Hunedoara County, which provides 1% of the production of energy of the country.
