Description:
State - diaspora relations are problematised in order to show how they are engendered through the process of immigration, diasporisation and transnational politics. The article analyses five models of state - diaspora relations, i.e. reincorporation, ethnic, economic, political opposition and transnational, in the context of the history of Haitian immigration to the USA. It is argued that these relations have contributed to a repositioning and reshaping of both the diaspora and the state.
