Description:
As the way to make Japanese paper, the shrubs are cut and pruned, and the branches of the shrubs are soaked in water in order to scrape the outer bark away. This bark is soaked again to detach its inner layer, which is then boiled in a strong alkaline solution to remove starch and oil. These fibres are rinsed to remove all dirt, the beaten and dipped into containers filled with water and added tororo-aoi. Using bamboo mesh screen set in a wooden frame, make a sheet paper with traditional technique. The sheets are piled up when wet, and later laid out to dry. Using color pigment water, paint the dried paper. After dried completely, Arum root paste (konjak-nori) is applied on the paper. Then the paper is crumpled till it is getting softer. Colors: Yellow, Scarlet, Rose, Violet, Blue, Dark Blue, Green, Dark Brown. Part of: Materials Collection -- University of Pennsylvania -- www.nacoodlab.com
