Description:
Hereditary angioedema is an autosomal dominant disease. Affected members experience bouts of edema in nearly every part of the body. Due to reduced concentration of C1-inhibitor, an important regulatory protein, small vessels leak and fluid is displaced into skin (swellings) or mucous membranes (angioedema of the throat which can lead to suffocation, and edema of viscera with colicky abdominal pain). A number of studies suggest varying degrees of activation of complement, kallikrein-kinin, fibrinolytic and clotting systems during attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE), but a single study analyzing these systems at the same time in patients during attacks and remission has not been published. We studied in detail activation of the systems mentioned in five patients with HAE during attacks and remission and in healthy controls. (DBO)
