  • Description: The dependent variable, which could also be called a performance variable or outcome variable, was the proportion of correct responses participants gave. Since all 6 kinds of information were accessed through both embossed materials and tablets, the authors report main effects of each independent variable (how much each variable affected the outcome measure), as well as the interaction between the two independent variables (whether the effect of one independent variable was influenced by the other independent variable). Both main effects are not statistically significant, because the p value is greater than .05. Since there is a greater than 5% possibility that any observed differences occurred simply because of chance, the authors cannot conclude that there were true differences between the two ways of displaying information or among the 6 types of information. Since the p value for the interaction term is also greater than .05, however, this interaction is also not statistically significant.
