  • Description: A study of 4868 paperback books in print during 1955 to determine: (1) from what sources paperbound publishers took their books, (2) who had written them, & (3) what their subject matter was. Results indicated that about 75% of these paperbacks were reprints drawn from a variety of well-known hardcover publishers. 'The majority of reprints & of originals were the works of established authors. The greatest influence of paperback publishing is probably upon light fiction, its main fare, & serious nonfiction, a smaller but important segment. Although there are many exceptions, esp in fiction, the better quality paperback titles are generally higher in price & less readily available to the public.' I. Taviss.
