Description: In April 2006, the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit held in 'Bancoult v. McNamara' that claims against present and past U.S. officials stemming from the forced displacement of the Chagossian residents of the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia were not justiciable under the U.S. political question doctrine. The Chagossians were removed from Diego Garcia by the British government to make way for construction of a joint U.S.-British military facility there in the 1960s and early 1970s. The district court found their claims to be nonjusticiable. The court of appeals agreed.
