Description:
The main aim of this thesis is to explore the beliefs and practices of EFL [English as a Foreign Language] teachers in Styrian secondary schools with regard to how the pronunciation of English as an International Language is taught. Firstly, the study deals with issues regarding the perceived importance of pronunciation as a part of English language teaching in school. Secondly, it investigates teachers’ beliefs about what meaningful pronunciation instruction should and should not entail. Thirdly, it evaluates the reported difficulty of certain pronunciation items and finally, it explores pronunciation goals teachers set for themselves and their students. An online questionnaire was sent out to over 60 secondary schools all over Styria, and in total, 93 filled out forms could be used for the subsequent analysis. The findings of the study revealed several interesting insights regarding the issues mentioned above. Teachers were generally convinced of the importance of regular pronunciation instruction in foreign language classes. Segmental items were predominantly seen to be more difficult for students to acquire than suprasegmental items, although only few believed in the unteachability of certain aspects of pronunciation in a classroom setting. The broad majority of teachers reported to regularly use native speaker recordings in their teaching, while only a small part indicated to also include non-native speaker accents. As far as reference models and desirable goals are concerned, there is a clear tendency towards favouring native speaker accents to be witnessed among the participants in my study, both concerning models and goals for teachers themselves and also for their students. vorgelegt von Antje Wozonig Zusammenfassungen in Deutsch und Englisch Diplomarbeit Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz 2017 1684
