  • Description: The current understanding of the pathophysiology of alpha(sub 1)-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency is reviewed. AAT is a protease inhibitor that targets neutrophil elastase to prevent the destruction of lung tissue from elastase activity. How the current knowledge about the genetic disorder has led to new therapeutic strategies is also discussed.
