Description:
Producers of pulp and paper products are continually searching for methods to improve their manufacturing processes and enhance their cost-competitiveness. It has been known for many years that increasing the disc rotational speed of a double-disc refiner will reduce the specific energy required to attain a certain freeness. Recent studies conducted with an 1,800-rpm primary refiner and a 1,200-rpm secondary refiner in the Andritz Sprout-Bauer pilot plant (Springfield, Ohio) have resulted in a 20% mainline energy savings. However, it has been discovered that when care is taken to control operating conditions of the high-speed primary refiner, the resulting pulp quality can be made equal to, or in some aspects even better than, the conventional 1,200-rpm operation. The results of the study are presented.
