  • Description: The NHS should realise that uprooting is a very hard thing to do. It’s not an easy option, so it should be possible to keep staff at home even if the NHS can’t outcompete every term and condition that overseas systems offer. But the four in 10 junior doctors who are considering moving to Australia2 may not feel the same pull back to a more established home. The earlier people leave, the harder it will be for them to return.While health systems should encourage movement to spread good practice and innovation, they should also encourage staff to return home by modelling incentives used by other countries that make them an attractive place to work. I hope that, by the time we step back on British soil, the conditions will feel a little more like Australia, even if the weather remains overcast.
