  • Description: Managers often undermine their credibility when they frequently speak for others. This practice, known as managerial ventriloquism, is common in organizations but can have negative consequences. It can harm a manager's credibility, damage company culture, and hurt the organization's reputation and profits. However, by paying attention to these behaviors and making minor adjustments, managers can gain more autonomy and demonstrate their authority. They can modify their word choice, speak for others less frequently, and be more mindful of what they say in this role. This can boost their credibility and effectiveness as managers and foster a healthy corporate culture where responsibility is clearly assigned and claimed. Here, Hollis and Wright conducted research, including ethnographic studies in various organizations, to understand and study managerial ventriloquism. They also provide examples and suggestions for managers to improve their communication skills and enhance their credibility and effectiveness.
