  • Description: In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of wood pulp as a medium for sprout production in plant factories with artificial lighting and low-frequency manual watering. The growth of Japanese radish (Kaiware-daikon) sprouts and their viable bacterial counts when cultivated on wood pulp were compared with that of sprouts grown on urethane medium, which is conventionally used. The fresh weight and hypocotyl length of sprouts grown on wood pulp medium were greater than those of the sprouts grown on urethane medium. This is probably due to the higher water retention capacity of the pulp medium. Viable bacterial counts at packing time and after four days of storage at 5 ℃ were not significantly different between the two media at each period. Thus, we propose pulp medium as a promising alternative to urethane medium in simple systems for sprout cultivation.
