Description:
People with a facial difference (FD) are stigmatized. This stigmatization manifests in the affectivereactions of perceivers, notably disgust and fear, which are generally implicated in dehumanization. As a visible stigma, FD seems to influence visual attention towards the face. Yet, few works have triedto associate these fields. Thus, this thesis project aimed to better understand the social stigma of FD,and more specifically the links between visual perception, stigmatizing affective reactions, anddehumanization. By focusing on affective reactions, we first proposed a typology of these stigmatizingaffective reactions, then highlighted their links with changes in visual attention, and finally determinedwhether these reactions reflect a dehumanization process. Our results show that FD globally changesthe visual attention and influences the arousal of stigmatizing affective reactions, eliciting lessneutrality and more surprise, disgust, fear and contempt. Visual perception of FD appears to bedecisive as the change in visual attention was related to both stigmatizing affective reactions anddehumanizing attributions. However, future work is needed to better understand how the gaze ofperceivers on FD can be dehumanizing. Overall, the links between facial disfigurement, social stigma, and dehumanization would benefit from further investigation.
