Description:
// ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: Conceptions of one's own culture and person are culturally shaped and partially reflect comparisons with other cultures and other people. In the process of developing cultural and individual identities, conceptual schemes play a substantial role since they constitute essential aspects of the cognitive repertoire cultures provide to help their members develop collective and personal identities. This article outlines the historical and methodological role of some of these schemes in mainstream psychology and examines their impact on the scientific construction of self and other. Subsequently, the author reflects on how ethnocentric biases in psychological research can be minimized. Reprinted by permission of Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht
