  • Description: Introduction The conflict in Vietnam was one of the focal points of the Cold War (1945-89) in Southeast Asia. It was in Vietnam that two long-lasting wars – the so-called ‘First Indochina War’ (1946-54) and ‘Vietnam War’ (1954-75) – were fought during the Cold War period. Although the historiography on the conflict is plentiful, with hundreds of works published in many languages that present the wars from different perspectives, two broad interpretations of the conflict remain influential. One situates the Vietnam conflict as a historical consequence of the Cold War. It argues that what happened in Vietnam from 1945 to 1975 was the result of the ideological confrontation between the socialist and capitalist blocs, and the wars in Vietnam were, therefore, mainly proxy wars, in which the role and influence of exogenous factors, particularly those of France, the United States, the Soviet Union and China, were emphasized, whereas endogenous factors, particularly that of the Vietnamese people, played no important part at all. A second perspective, and one held by many scholars of Vietnam, including Vietnamese historians, promotes the view that the conflict was mainly a nationalist struggle for national independence and reunification. Although the role of exogenous factors is acknowledged, it is, according to this view, the force of Vietnamese nationalism and patriotism that motivated and encouraged the participation of the Vietnamese people in their struggle for independence.
