Eventually he is forced to join the gang, but when they ask him to kill a man, he realizes the tremendous mistake he has made. That’s why he decides to leave Rome and take refuge in America. In the West he starts a new life and falls in love with Edith Brown, the only daughter of the rich farmer who has offered him a job. Meanwhile De Bondre, the head of the “Circolo Nero”, manages to escape the police in Rome and flees to America. In Chicago he meets Raoul by chance and, by threatening to reveal his dark past, he forces him to take part in a robbery in the master's farm. Raoul refuses. To take revenge, De Bondre kidnaps Edith. After a dramatic chase, Raoul reaches De Bondre at the edge of a cliff; eventually De Bondre falls into the abyss, while Edith and Raoul come finally together. The video is a copy from the film print held by the Museo Nazionale del Cinema and previously restored by the EYE Filmmuseum: 35 mm, positive, acetate, 774 m, 38’ at 18 fps, colour (Desmetcolor), Dutch intertitles, silent.- Rovinato dal gioco, il conte Raoul Ruggeri chiede un prestito al presidente del "Circolo Nero", una banda che compie furti mirabolanti (lascia come firma un biglietto su cui è tracciato appunto un cerchio nero), alla quale è indotto ad aderire. Ma alla prima azione cui gli viene chiesto di partecipare (uccidere un nemico), Raoul comprende l'errore compiuto, rompe i giuramenti fatti e, lasciata Roma, si rifugia in America: nel West si ricostruisce, da semplice cowboy, una nuova vita, trovando anche l'amore con Edith Brown, unica figlia del ricco allevatore che gli ha dato lavoro. Nel frattempo a Roma la polizia è impegnata in una indagine per distruggere la banda del "Circolo Nero": il detective Svento riesce a infiltrarsi e a organizzare un'irruzione: l'intera banda finisce in prigione, solo il capo, De Bondre, riesce a fuggire e a rifugiarsi a sua volta in America. A Chicago scopre le tracce di Raoul e, con la minaccia di rivelare il suo passato, vuole indurlo a partecipare a un furto nella fattoria del padrone. Raoul rifiuta e De Bondre, per vendicarsi, rapisce Edith. Dopo un drammatico inseguimento con uno dei suoi servi mori, Raoul raggiunge De Bondre sul ciglio di un burrone: l'uno precipita nell'abisso mentre Edith, salvata dal negro, si riunisce a Raoul per sempre.
