  • Description: The primary goal of the study is to identify the factors that influence small and medium-sized firms' adoption of electronic commerce (e-commerce). To achieve this goal, the authors have developed a conceptual model integrating the Technology, Organization, and Environment (TOE) framework using a combination of the Innovation Diffusion Theory (IDT) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) with individual/business characteristics. The study follows a review of 134 papers published between 1999-2019 from databases such as Ebscohost, Emerald, Google Scholar, Inderscience, Science Direct (Elsevier), and Taylor & Francis. Further, the authors selected 50 papers using a systematic review to identify ten factors with the highest frequency of occurrence used consistently in literature to develop an integrated conceptual model. The scant study that has been done in this area partially demonstrates the dynamic nature of e-commerce adoption in SMEs. By fusing important theoretical ideas from individual-level analysis with the interactive process viewpoint for organizational-level analysis, this study provides a multi-model conceptual framework. This is consistent with the literature review's recommendation to integrate already-existing theoretical models to perform a thorough examination of e-commerce adoption within SMEs. The practical implication includes empirical testing of the conceptual model by researchers or owners/ managers of SMEs for planning the adoption process to ensure user acceptance of e-commerce adoption within their organizations.
