  • Description: Magnetic-field measurements made in the outer regions of the TOSCA small multipole tokamak are described. Observed oscillations in the poloidal and radial fields are discussed, along with the production of m = 2 and m = 3 magnetic islands. The results reported indicate that: (1) m = 4, 3, 2, and n = 1 tearing modes are produced in TOSCA by a current gradient; (2) the m = 3 mode saturates at an amplitude of no more than 3%, with a corresponding island width not exceeding 2.0 cm; (3) surface destruction and a minor disruption occur at or above 3% amplitude; (4) the m = 2 islands reach 3.0 cm in size before a major disruption occurs; and (5) no other mode is present in the disruptive process in the TOSCA device.
