  • Description: Some trends in the history of sociol in Austria are sketched, with extensive reference to literature on Austria & Austrian soc sci's. The following historical phases are distinguished: (1) The 'pre-history' of sociol in Austria, before 1750. If one considers descriptions of att's & ways of life of Ur & Ru pop's as forerunners of sociol, some writers of the Viennese Renaissance may be considered 'pre-sociol'ts.' (2) Early systematic descriptions of Austrian & Viennese society, from 1750-1900. During this period, jurists, writers expressing soc criticism, & soc statisticians (also called 'topographers') founded Austrian sociol as such. (3) The first flourishing of sociol in Austria, around 1900, which lasted until WWI. Due to pressing SE & pol'al problems, no academic traditions could be established, however. (4) Sociol in the 1st half of the 20th cent, based on 4 diff intellectual & sci'fic developments of the 19th & early 20th cent, which matured after WWI. They were: (a) the statistical study of child labor, SE conditions of the We, & religious conditions; (b) interest in analyzing soc problems quantitatively by means of specially designed surveys, which had reached sci'fic standards by 1900; (c) a promulgation of Austrian logical & historical criticism of conservative soc teachings under the name of sociol; (d) efforts to illustrate the heterogeneity of the intellectual roots of sociol. Here the neoHeglian system of soc thought developed by Othmar Spann is mentioned. (5) The period of beginning empirical res which started around 1930. It is viewed as connected with the Austrian res'er Paul Lazarsfeld & his associates, who left Austria in the early 1930's & established the Bur of Applied Soc Res at Columbia U. From there, the special interest in methodology spread. (6) In the 1950's, a certain instit'ization of Austrian sociol'al res took place. Various instit's are mentioned: the Instit for Ecclesiastical Soc Res, the Soc Sci Res Center, & the Instit of Empirical Sociol & Statistics. Their activities are described. New instit's, which have just recently been founded, & can be expected to change the set-up of sociol'al res in Austria, include a planned Soc Sci U to be established in Linz within the next 2 yrs, new chairs in sociol to be introduced at the U's of Salzburg & Innsbruck, an Instit for Advanced Studies founded in Vienna in 1964 with the assistance of the Ford Foundation, which features exchange in professors & res'ers between the US & Austria, & the Vienna Co-Ordination Center for Soc Sci Res & Documentation of the Internat'l Soc Sci Council. This is stated to have initiated- a new phase: that of the instit'ization of internat'l cooperation & comparison, which, it is hoped, will lead not only to greater internat'l exchange of ideas & information in sociol, but more opportunities for creative work.
