  • Description: Japan is the first country in Asia which has adopted laws to protect her cultural heritage. In the beginning of the fifties, Japan innovates with the notion of intangible cultural heritage. This country made the international community adopt it through the UNESCO Convention in 2003. This paper analyses the historic conditions of the apparition of the first laws of protection, their meaning and at the beginning of the 21th century all the social facts which hinder its application. Among intangible cultural heritage two basic groups can be found: fine and applied arts, and drama and music. Japanese law tries to adapt to a never ending evolution. It stresses the importance of handing down those technics.
